The quickest way to block or hide images on Safari depends entirely on whether you want to clean up a specific webpage or block images across the entire browser.
Here are the fastest, most effective methods available across your Apple devices: 1. Hide Specific Images Instantly (iPhone, iPad & Mac)
If you are running iOS 18/macOS Sequoia or later, Apple includes a native feature called Distraction Control to instantly make unwanted images or elements vanish.
On iPhone/iPad: Tap the Page Menu/Tools icon on the left side of the search bar. Select Hide Distracting Items, tap the target image, and click Hide. Tap Done.
On Mac: Click the Smart Search menu icon on the left of the URL bar, choose Hide Distracting Items, and click the image you want to remove.
2. Strip Out All Visual Layouts using Reader Mode (All Devices)
To completely remove webpage layouts, banners, sidebars, and most non-essential images for clean, text-focused reading:
On iPhone/iPad: Press and hold the Page Menu/Reader icon (the two lines or page icon) in the address bar to instantly toggle Show Reader.
On Mac: Click the Reader button (represented by horizontal lines) on the left side of the Smart Search field, or use the keyboard shortcut Shift + Command + R.
3. Block All Website Images using Extensions (iPhone & iPad)
Apple removed the old native “Disable Images” toggle from mobile settings to preserve web formatting. If you want a blanket block on all images to save data or speed up browsing, you will need a third-party app:
Download a dedicated content blocker from the App Store (such as Image Blocker or Roadblock). Go to your device’s Settings > Apps > Safari > Extensions. Toggle the installed content blocker extension to On. 4. Advanced: Use Developer Tools (Older Mac Versions)
On older versions of macOS, you can block images using Safari’s internal development settings: How to enable images on Safari 17.0 – Apple Communities
